Uttaran takes an 18-year leap
COLORS’ flagship show, Uttaran is ready to take an 18 year leap. The story which started off with the portrayal of Ichcha and Tapasya building their friendship as kids, their squabbles as adolescents and their love-hate relationship as adults is all set to move to the next leg focusing on their children and life thereon. Joining Ichcha in her grown-up avatar will be a whole new brigade of young stars that will form the next generation whose lives will form the crux of Uttaran starting March 26th, 2012. A special feature of this leap will be Tina Datta who for the first time will be seen in a double avatar; as Ichcha and also as her daughter, Meethi. Accompanying her on this journey will be Sreejita De who will don the role of Tapasya’s daughter, Mukta.
Highlighting the reason behind the 18-year leap on the show, Prashaant Bhatt, Head of Fiction, COLORS said, “Uttaran is a struggle between the haves and the have not’s which has been portrayed through the lives of Ichcha and Tapasya so far. The 18-year leap is a natural progression that will not only continue the portrayal of their lives, but also shift focus to their children. The new characters will infuse the show with a new life thus making it very interesting besides retaining the core concept of Uttaran. While the existing characters will now move on to take on some more interesting shades, like Tina’s mother-daughter avatar, new faces will take on strong characters that take the story forward. We are sure that Meethi and Mukti will recreate the amazing chemistry that was shared by Ichcha and Tapasya when they started their journey.”
While Ichcha faces life imprisonment for having stabbed kidnapper Avinash to death, she discovers that she is pregnant with Meethi – a child who Ammo decides to bring up along with Kanha. As Jogi Thakur and his family step in to help raise Mukta, the Bundela family takes onus of Yuvraj’s upbringing. Upon being released from jail Ichcha notices the strange turn of fate - Ammo and Kanha have struck it big while Jogi Thakur and his family are forced to live in modesty. While Meethi grows up as a grounded young woman with a heart of gold, strong-minded Mukta focuses on the single aim in her life - regaining the lost wealth and Yuvraj grows up as a reckless young man whiling away his time and hating his mother. The story, post the leap, will not only focus on the continuing trials and tribulations in Ichcha’s life but also the new twist in the tale with Meethi and Mukta’s friendship while they have no knowledge about the reality of their hidden past.
Speaking further about her double role, Tina Datta said, “I feel privileged that the show that launched my career is also helping me take it forward in such a spectacular manner. I feel blessed that I not only get to play two different characters but also get to experiment with my look. I am spending as much time as possible working on how I will make Ichcha and Meethi two distinct characters, yet with similar characteristics. It is a challenging job and I am absolutely excited about working on it.”
Commenting on this development, Rupali Guha & Pintoo Guha from Filmfarm said, “Uttaran was one of those path breaking concepts that was a trend setter, right from inception stage. Through the highpoints and drama that was built up, the show has become a household name. Three years into Uttaran, the time is ripe to offer viewers a peek into the life and times of what the future has in store for characters much loved and accepted by our loyal viewers.”
With Uttaran taking the 18-year leap, the new lead characters will be Meethi (Tina Datta) and Mukta (Sreejita De) who will be supported by Yuvraj (Yashdeep Nain) and Kanha (Chaitanya Choudhury). Even as the new characters lead the way, viewers will still be able to enjoy seeing their favourite characters Jogi Thakur, Ammo and Naani on-screen. Will the friendships bloom or will the shadow of the past overwrite the possibility of a future?
